What gear do I use?

Firstly you’ll see from below that I’m a Nikon user through and through.  I have owned Canon in the past but I prefer the way Nikons are built and the intuitive way the whole system works, I don’t have to fiddle with awkward menus and plastic buttons I can just get on with shooting, even in a torrential downpour.

 

Camera

1. Nikon D700
A powerful camera with incredible low-light capabilities and a Full Frame (FX) sensor.

2. Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Lens
Extreme wide-angle with edge-to-edge sharpness.  The most fun you could have in a lens.

3. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Lens
Professional workhorse and the one lens I couldn’t do without.

4. Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VRII Lens
Second generation zoom with vibration reduction.  Essential for sports, weddings and even portraits.

5. Nikon 85mm f/1.4G Lens
My favourite lens for portraits and studio work.  Sometimes called the “cream machine” for it beautiful blur effects, and yet the sharpest lens in my kit.

6. Nikon SB-900/SB-800 Speedlights
Workhorse flashguns for just about every type of situation.

7. MB-D10 Battery Pack
Extended battery pack which also allows for easier camera holding in portrait mode.

 

Remote Accessories

1. Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 and AC3 Control unit
Wireless trigger that sits on top of the camera and controls remote flash units by radio.  The AC3 unit controls the power output of the remote flash units.

2. Pocket Wizard Flex TT5′s
Powerful transceivers that allow remote flashguns to be triggered wirelessly.

3. eBay Shutter Remote
Generic shutter remote for long exposure and HDR shoots.  Cheaper than official Nikon remotes but work just as well.

 

Other Accessories

1. Lastolite Triflector and softboxes
I prefer softboxes to umbrellas, for their directional wrap-around light.

2. Giotto Tripod and Ballhead
Really essential to have a tripod and head you can trust for landscapes, weddings, long exposure, etc.

3. Thinktank Bags
Professional grade bags for every type of gear combo.

4. BlackRapid DR-1
Innovative sling-shot type straps.  Great for long shoots with 2 camera bodies.
